Mountain Bike Race Team
Blackhawk Composite Mountain Bike Team is a co-ed composite club for 6th through 12th grade students in the Waunakee, Middleton, Barneveld, and Mt Horeb school districts.
It is part of the Wisconsin High School Cycling League which is one of the many leagues in the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA).
The goal of NICA, the Wisconsin High School Cycling League, and our club is to build strong minds, bodies, characters, and community through cycling. Contrary to traditional youth sports, there are no try-outs or cuts from the team. Every Blackhawk Composite student athlete rides at every practice and has the opportunity to participate in as many or as few races as they would like.
Yes, Blackhawk Composite is a mountain biking team, but cycling is only used as a vehicle to help the student athletes develop themselves, and less of the focus. The student athletes are encouraged to participate at their own pace, provided guidance on how to handle physical challenges, and are required to set and work towards achieving goals throughout the season.
None of this would be possible without the help of volunteers. The entire coaching staff is made up of volunteers that are motivated to help young adults experience new adventures on bikes. Each coach undergoes a background check and depending the coaching level they are at, completes various levels of risk management, coaching, on-the-bike skills, and first aid training. In addition to the coaches, parent involvement is incredibly helpful during the course of the season. That involvement includes help with on- and off-the-bike practices, games, races, and the logistics of putting all of that together.
